As a child, I never owned the popular Wii. Admittedly, I experienced Wii Sports along with several flagship titles while staying with family and friends back in that era, however I missed my personal Wii system, meaning I missed out on several excellent installments from Nintendo's beloved series.

A prime example featured Super Mario Galaxy, which, along with its sequel, got modernized recently then adapted for Switch consoles. The initial release also appeared in 2020’s limited-edition collection Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I embraced the opportunity to experience what many consider one of the best Mario titles in history. I was quickly sucked in, and can definitely say it lives up to almost twenty years of hype. However, I also recognized how happy I am motion-sensing features have largely remained as historical features.

Starting the Space Journey

Similar to most Mario adventure, Super Mario Galaxy opens as Bowser capturing Mario's royal friend and her castle. His armada of spacecraft resembling pirates carry her among the stars, launching Mario out amongst the stars in the process. The hero discovers adorable stellar beings named Lumas plus Rosalina on her cosmic observatory. She charges Mario with finding power stars to energize the cosmic base so they can chase after the antagonist, opening exploration opportunities to begin adventuring.

Super Mario Galaxy’s platforming offers pleasure, and all it took was playing through a couple levels to realize why it receives such praise. Players will notice similarities to anyone who’s played Mario's 3D adventures, and the mechanics are approachable and intuitive following Nintendo's style.

Gravity-Defying Gameplay

Being cosmic enthusiast, the setting perfectly matches my interests, and it allows for Super Mario Galaxy to have fun with gravity. Orbital stages let Mario to literally run circles around them similar to Goku pursuing Bubbles from classic anime. When structures approach, Mario can leap across getting captured via planetary attraction from adjacent structures. Other platforms are flat discs, and often feature rewards underneath, easily overlooked spots.

Rediscovering Classic Characters

What’s fun about experiencing this game following long gap includes knowing some of its characters. I didn't realize Rosalina originated in this game, and that she became the caring guardian of the Lumas. Prior to this experience, to me she was just part of my regular Mario Kart World character selection. Likewise for Penguins, alongside whom I liked swimming during an early beach level.

Gyroscopic Limitations

The main inconvenience while experiencing Galaxy currently involves motion features, which are used for gathering, targeting, and firing star bits, colorful objects distributed throughout stages. Using portable mode involved moving and adjusting the device to direct, which feels a bit clunky. Movement features appear frequently during certain jumping segments, where you have to aim the stellar pointer at surfaces to pull Mario toward them.

Levels that wholly require movement inputs perform optimally with independent remotes enhancing accuracy, such as the ray-riding stage during early game. I’ve never been enthusiastic about movement inputs, while they didn't improve notably effectively in Super Mario Galaxy. Luckily, by collecting sufficient stars from other levels, these gyroscopic sections might be entirely bypassed. I attempted the stage where Mario has to navigate a massive orb across a path filled with gaps, then noped out after one attempt.

Classic Nintendo Magic

Except for the awkward motion-based input methods, there’s really nothing to complain about throughout Galaxy, while its cosmic stages are a delight to navigate. While impressive games including later releases have come after it, Super Mario Galaxy stays among the finest and creative Mario games around.
